Jacomijn Schellevis and Micki Skudlarczyk are fascinated by death. Theirpassion is not painted with a macabre brush, but laid down by the beauty ofburial, its quietude of organic process and its significance in worldculture. Jacomijn and Micki met in Mexico as artists-in residence. Afterrealizing they had a mutual attraction to the nature of death andexperiencing firsthand the beauty and all-embracing Dia De Los Muertos,they should collaborate. In 2009, a well-received series of installation called "Origin-Oorsprong"were placed in the Netherlands-where Jacomijn calls home. "Origin-Oorsprong"was based on Pagan burial rituals native to the culture in the Netherlandspre-Christianity. They are now placing a second installation with thegracious cooperation of Lone Fir cemetery- aptly named "Still".

On October 1st, there will be a sculpture of fairy-tale proportions built ofa crystallized sugar solution on the cemetery grounds. "Still" invites thepublic to come celebrate the beauty of life and its inevitable process; theedible sugary installation will be slowly dismantled by people who want totake a piece of this art with them. Eat it, shrine it or do with it as youplease, the rest will be a natural, symbolic disintegration into the soiland vegetation-the sweetness of life dissolving into the earth to shapeshiftinto evidence of life repeating itself into a subtle eternal fractal ofgentle beauty .

The human experience of this installation is a launching platform for AliciaBlue Gallery's full transition to an alternative art space. "Still" will bethe trailhead of a manifold series of non-traditional experiential showswith the freedom to display more complex aesthetics and ideas that eliminatethe necessity of a brick-and mortar space. Op de Lemelerberg hebben we veel bezoekers gehad; toevallige passanten, maar ook veel bezoekers die speciaal voor de kunstwerken kwamen. De maaltijd na een begrafenis was een gelegenheid om grootse verhalen over de overledene te vertellen, wat hem verder hielp richting het hiernamaals. Deze installatie maakt gebruik van een soundscape, die resulteerde uit een samenwerking tussen de kunstenaars en Jan Paul de Bondt.

The meal following a burial was a place to tell grandiose stories about the deceased in order to help them move forward into the afterworld. This installation utilizes a soundscape, which resulted from a collaboration between the artists and Jan Paul de Bondt.

De kunstwerken zijn te bezichtigen tussen zonsopgang en zonsondergang. Deze werken zijn o.a. geïnspireerd op de maaltijd die na de begrafenis plaatsvond en het verband tussen bijgeloof en de manier waarop begraven werd.
Halverwege november vindt er een eind expositieplaats.

In de grafheuvels uit de steen- en bronstijd werden de mensen voornamelijk in foetushouding begraven, met hun hoofd naar het noorden en gezicht naar het oosten. Het was gebruikelijk om grafgiften mee te geven. Bij de Germanen werden belangrijke mensen soms op een verhoging van plaggen gelegd, voor zij gecremeerd of begraven werden.
Deze installatie was te zien op het Meststieken in het Dal van de Mosbeek in Vasse. Bezoekers werd gevraagt hun ideeen te delen over wat heden ten dage geschikte grafgiften zijn.

In the burial mounds of the stone and bronze age people were mostly buried in a fetal position, with their heads facing north and their face facing east. It was customary to give grave gifts to the deceaced. The Germanic people sometimes laid important men on the turf, before they were buried or cremated.
This installation was seen at the Meststieken in the Valley of the Mosbeek in Vasse. Visitors were asked to share their ideas about what would be a suitable burial gift today.

De Germanen zagen water als de poort naar de andere wereld. De poorten staan in noord-zuid richting. De Onderwereld zou in het noorden liggen.
The Germans saw water as the gateway into another world. The gates are in north-south direction. The Underworld was thought to be in the north.

In de grafheuvels zijn grafgiften gevonden. De ideeën over waarom men grafgiften meegaf verschilt. Zo zou men beter voorbereid zijn op reis naar de andere wereld, of men kreeg giften om als dode vooral niet terug te keren naar de levende wereld. De grafhuisjes werden in de grafheuvels geplaatst of erop. Men bracht er voor een bepaalde periode giften aan de overledenen. Op sommige plekken in Duitsland worden de grafhuisjes nog op de graven gezet.

In the burial mounds burial gifts were found. The ideas about why one gave grave gifts varies. They would be better prepared for the journey to the other world, or it was given to be sure the deceased would not return to the living world. The gravehouses were placed on or in the burial mounds. They brought there gifts to the deceased for a certain period. In some places in Germany the gravehouses are still being put on the graves.

Burial mounds, White Wives and Germanic mythology as inspiration for art in the landscape of Overijssel.

September 1, 2009 launched the art project Origin-Oorsprong, a collaboration between artists Jacomijn Schellevis (NL) and Micki Skudlarczyk (USA).
During the next three months at various locations within the countryside of Landscape Overijssel, Netherlands, the artists will create installations and performances about mythology and belief systems around death and the afterlife as they were experienced in the Province of Overijssel from the Stone Age to the advent of Christianity.

Jacomijn Schellevis and Micki Skudlarczyk met in 2008 during an artist-in-residence in Mexico. With their project Origin-Oorsprong, they will draw inspiration from the landscape, cultural heritage and folk culture for the creation of their art. The heather fields, forests, water systems and burial mounds within the landscape will become locations to interpret pagan traditions and customs surrounding funerals and cremations as well as their religious beliefs. They want to challenge the way viewers see the heritage within which one lives and works, and to view this experience in a new way. During the project, people from the community are invited to comment on the work. Although they will be working mostly in nature, they will occasionally work in their studio in Culture Studio R10 in Zwolle.

The first location where the artists descend is the Valley of the Mosbeek of Twente in the northeast of Overijssel. The end of September we will see the first art show. Following this viewing they will work within the Lemelerberg / Archemerberg estate and the Horte (between Zwolle and Dalfsen). In October, in the Library Zwolle Center they will have on exhibit a digital presentation as well as have work associated with the project with Kunstuitleen Zwolle.

In late November, a final presentation will take place in a location easily accessible to a wide audience. Here the artists show an exciting overview of all installations and performances from the entire project period and - where possible - combine interaction of visitors during the site-specific projects. All work is documented and will be featured in a publication during the final presentation.

In de periode van september tot en met november vindt het project Origin/Oorsprong van beeldend kunstenaars Jacomijn Schellevis (NL) en Micki Skudlarczyk (USA) plaats. Samen gaan ze locatiegebonden installaties en performances realiseren op verschillende plekken in Overijssel. De kunstenaars gaan een interactie aan met elkaar en met het landschap om werk te maken over hoe men dacht over de dood en het hiernamaals in de voorchristelijke periode in Overijssel. Hiervoor doen zij onderzoek naar o.a. grafheuvels, witte wieven en de Germaanse overleveringen omtrent dood en begrafenis rituelen/tradities. Het project zal plaatsvinden in de natuurgebieden van Landschap Overijssel en zowel de heide, het bos als het watergebied behoren tot het werkveld. Hoewel zij grotendeels in de natuur werken, zullen zij af en toe ook in hun atelier in Cultuurwerkplaat R10 aan het project werken. Geïnteresseerden zijn uiteraard welkom om de lokale eindpresentaties te bezoeken. Het werk van Schellevis en Skudlarczyk zal voortkomen uit opgravingen, sagen en legendes die bij een specifieke omgeving horen. Daarom zullen voornamelijk mensen uit juist diezelfde omgeving uitgenodigd worden om op het gemaakte werk te reageren.

De eerste locatie waar de kunstenaars neerstrijken is het Dal van de Mosbeek in het noordoosten van Twente. Eind september zullen hier de eerste kunstwerken te zien zijn. Verder zullen zij o.a. ook op de Lemelerberg/Archemerberg en landgoed De Horte(tussen Zwolle en Dalfsen) werken realiseren.

In oktober zal er bij de Bibliotheek Zwolle Centrum een digitale presentatie te zien zijn bij het Historisch Informatiepunt (1e verdieping) en samen met Kunstuitleen Zwolle wordt een kunstwerk in oplage gerealiseerd horende bij het project.
Halverwege november vindt er een eindpresentatie plaats op een locatie die goed toegankelijk is voor een breed publiek. Hier zullen de kunstenaars een overzicht tonen van de installaties en performances van de projectperiode en waar mogelijk combineren met de interactie van bezoekers tijdens de locatiegebonden projecten. Alle werken worden gedocumenteerd en zullen te zien zijn in de publicatie die tijdens de eindpresentatie gepresenteerd wordt.

Schellevis en Skudlarczyk hebben elkaar ontmoet tijdens een Art-in-Residence van de Fundacion Gruber Jez in Mexico. Schellevis onderzocht er de dodencultuur van Mexico. Het werk wat hieruit ontstaan is, was te zien tijdens “Contradiccon” in het Stedelijk Museum Zwolle en “Axis Mundi” in het Kunstenlab in Deventer begin 2009. Micki Skudlarczyk werkte tijdens dezelfde Art-in-Residence periode aan een project over de tijdelijkheid van het leven. Haar installatie “Well Finshed” was in mei 2009 te zien bij Launch Pad Gallery, Portland, Oregon (USA). In Mexico is het idee voor een samenwerking ontstaan. Naar aanleiding daarvan heeft Schellevis Skudlarczyk uitgenodigd om naar Nederland te komen voor deze bijzondere samenwerking in het Overijsselse landschap.
